Transitioning into Taking the Lead

Student teaching is a rare opportunity for TCs to practice teaching alongside knowledgeable others to guide and support their learning. Looking ahead, in January/February TCs will assemble a portfolio of materials about a series of lessons they plan and teach for the edTPA, their performance-based assessment. To prepare for this experience, it is important for TCs to take the lead in frequent and meaningful ways across planning, teaching, and assessment, starting now!

Mentors: How can I help my TC?
To help TCs understand how lessons work together, identify times when they can plan (or modify) and implement a series of connected lessons in at least one class section this month.

If you have not already done so, identify units that will be taught in January or February that the TC can teach for the edTPA. More details about edTPA will be in the next newsletter.
What can TCs be doing?
Mentors & TCs: How do we differentiate?
Mentors may naturally build differentiation into lessons, but it might not be visible to TCs. Explicitly discuss how the needs of different students are met in your classroom and brainstorm ways to incorporate new methods. Here are some ideas:
  • Provide visual aids
  • Group students strategically
  • Modify assessments
  • Offer student choice (e.g. topics of interest, formats product can take,  modes of gathering information, ways of reflecting on learning, etc.)
TCs: Plan and implement a series of lessons
After determining with your mentor when and how you can take the lead for at least one class section, plan a connected series of lessons and differentiated scaffolds. Ask your mentor for specific feedback in areas you are interested in improving.

1. Getting to know students and the school ecosystem
- Mentors and TCs, discuss differentiation and implement differentiated tasks for specific learners

2. Planning
- Mentors, determine what unit TCs can lead for the edTPA, and when it will take place
- Mentors and TCs, continue your regular co-planning routine, allowing the TC to plan (or modify) a series of lessons

3. Teaching
- Mentors and TCs, identify 1-2 class sections where the TC can regularly deliver the entire lesson
- TCs, personalize and modify delivery of the lesson for the specific class as needed

4. Assessment 
- Mentors and TCs, unpack a set of student work together and discuss instructional implications
- TCs, give targeted feedback to students

TEP Announcements
Regularly scheduled classes will end 11/20 then candidates will be at their placement schools 5 days a week. They will return to campus 4 evenings between Thanksgiving break and winter break:
  • 11/28 3:30-7:30 (edTPA writing day)
  • 12/5 3:30 - 7:30 (methods/assessment)
  • 12/12 3:30-7:30 (edTPA writing day)
  • 12/19 3:30-7:30 (edTPA writing day)
