Mentors: Preparing for edTPA

During the winter quarter, TCs will complete the edTPA, a portfolio of their planning, teaching, and assessment that focuses on student learning. TCs may consult mentors as they would a colleague, but the edTPA will be the responsibility of the TCs. Before winter break, decide with your TC(s) what series of lessons they can take on in January/February and stick to that plan. Planning, preparing, and practicing for the required components now will make the enacting and reflecting process more rewarding later.

PLANNING- what to expect
TCs will write lesson plans for a learning segment of 3-5 lessons with a central focus. Given all that TCs must demonstrate in their portfolio, having ownership of 5 or more lessons is best. Each lesson plan must include:
  • State-adopted content standards
  • Learning objectives
  • Informal and formal assessments
  • Instructional strategies and learning tasks
  • Instructional resources and materials
Mentors: When requested, you can be a sounding board for your TC as they plan the lesson series.
TEACHING- what to expect
TCs will be filmed in a selected class as they enact their planned lessons. Lesson plans and unit length should be adjustable in order to meet student needs.

Mentors: If asked, you can operate the camera for your TCs as they enact their lessons.
ASSESSMENT- what to expect
TCs will design, collect, and analyze assessments that show what students have learned. They will also provide feedback to students and use the evidence they find to plan next steps in instruction. Work samples for 3 focus students will be analyzed and submitted in the final edTPA portfolio.

Mentors: By request, you can act as an advisor as your TC designs and analyzes student work.
Trajectory column: What to focus on now (before edTPA)

1. Getting to know students and the school ecosystem
- TCs, try out scaffolds for high cognitive-demand activities and get feedback on how they work from students

2. Planning
- Mentors, finalize what unit TCs can lead for the edTPA, and when it will take place
- TCs, plan connected lessons for at least one class section

3. Teaching
- TCs, personalize and modify delivery of lessons for specific classes as needed
- Mentors, observe lessons and provide feedback addressing strengths and areas for growth in instruction

4. Assessment
- Mentors and TCs, work together to modify or develop a summative assessment
- TCs, give targeted feedback to students

TEP Announcements
TCs will return to campus two more times before winter break:
  • 12/12, 3:30-7:30 PM (edTPA writing day)
  • 12/19, 3:30-7:30 PM (edTPA writing day)
This winter break, practice self-care
Taking some time to plan ahead will help you take care of yourself through the busy time of edTPA. Please also take time away from work and school to rest, relax, and do things you enjoy!
