Completing the edTPA

TCs will soon be enacting their planned series of lessons for the edTPA and assembling a portfolio of their planning, teaching, and assessment that focuses on student learning. It is important that you stick to the agreed upon plan as to which lessons will be taught by the TC and when. The edTPA is a time for the TCs use their own skills to teach, plan, and assess, but they may consult mentors as they would a colleague. Read on for how to navigate these roles.

Mentors: support you can provide during the edTPA
Planning- When requested, you can be a sounding board for your TC as they plan the lesson series.
Teaching- If asked, you can operate the camera for your TCs as they enact their lessons.
Assessment- By request, you can act as an advisor as your TC designs assessments and analyzes student work.

Here are some question stems you could use to help support your TC's thinking:
  • "What are your...?"
  • "How might you...?"
  • "What are some of the possibilities...?"

Mentors + TCs: routines for edTPA
Discuss the following logistics in preparation for the edTPA lessons:
  • Who is responsible for the camera set-up, charging, and storage space each day?
  • How many and which groups or classes will be filmed?
  • Who will handle daily tasks such as taking attendance or copying materials?
  • What types of feedback will be given, and when? (Note: TCs should not receive prescriptive feedback at the end of filmed lessons)
TCs: Final preparations
To ease into the edTPA process with your students, share with your focal classes what the edTPA is and why it's important. Don't forget to decide who your focal students will be. And, you should get final agreement with your mentor about the details of the lesson plans and assessments you intend to use.
